Ott Gemischter Satz 2018
Rarely found in American wine shops, this Austrian 'field blend' is a great example of what the locals drink. A Gemischter Satz is made from a variety of grapes. In contrast to a cuvee, up to 20 different grape varieties are planted in the same vineyard, and harvested and pressed together. Originally, growers used the varying degrees of ripeness and acidity as a way to ensure consistent quality and guard against the risk of poor harvests. Slow Food's Foundation to preserve agricultural biodiversity has designated Gemischter Satz as one of only 300 foods in its worldwide Ark of Taste, to celebrate and preserve this traditional wine.
